Mourning Set for Soldier Killed in Action

WILDWOOD CREST - Ten days of mourning to honor the memory of Spec. 4 Michael Callahan, who was killed in. action in Vietnam June 7, was announced Thursday by city officials here and in Wildwood and North Wildwood.

Flags will be flown at half-mast through the 10-day period at all city halls, according to Mayor Joseph Von Savage.

Callahan, 21, of 105 Rosemary Road, served with the101st Airborne Division. He was graduated from Wildwood High School in 1967 and was sent to Vietnam last November.

In the formal announcement of the honor, Mayor Von Savage said: "We city officials are grieved at the recent tragedy and the loss of Michael Callahan. We extend our deepest sympathy to Mr. and Mrs. Callahan and their family in their great loss.

"It is an honorable sacrifice for a man to lay down his life for his country."

Young Callahan is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Callahan, two two brothers,  John and Timothy, and a sister, Mary.
