First Beschen-Callahan Races (1969):
Host North Wildwood won the title in the inaugural Callahan-Beschen Lifeguard Memorial Meet Thursday off the local beach.
North Wildwood Beach Patrol piled up 39 points or more than twice the total of Wildwood Crest, which tallied 18. Wildwood was third with 12 and Cape May 4th with seven.
More than 1,000 fans crowded the 23rd Street beach and the surrounding area to watch the competition, which is expected to become an annual event honoring two former local lifeguards, Michael Callahan and James Beschen, both of whom were killed in action in Vietnam.
North Wildwood won the swimming relay and the "can run", the former involving a four man team, each member swimming to a boat a quarter-mile out, the latter a simulated rescue.
The third event was two man rowing which was won by Wildwood Crest.
